Episode 16: Song Review: "Praying" by: Kesha

Hello folks. I have returned....a I should explain a little about my absence before I begin with this episode. So it started with a ton of work with my final weeks of college. It was my first year and I didn't know what to expect in it. Once that was done, there some serious hits in my personal life that I didn't have it in me to make these posts at the time as I want to be in my 100 percent when making these. Once that was done and over with, I wanted to make these quicker but then when looking at the hot 100, there wasn't much to say about it. I mean the song topping it, is mostly done in Spanish which is a language I am not good at. And I wasn't ready to make that much effort to look for the subtitles as the last time I did it, it took so long to find a Spanish song in English. I know I have promised some things before which hasn't happened. But For the reality seasons like "Survivor: Millennials vs Gen X", "Big Brother Canada 5", "Survivor: Game Changers", and "Stranded with a Million Dollars", I will save those and others for a special episode at the end of the year. As for songs, I have a way to catch up that will happen soon. With that said, lets start with this return with a epic music return in Kesha.

But honestly, is there any reason to discuss the history of Kesha? or Ke$ha as she was once known as. If you listened to pop music since 2009 then you know her from the start in Flo Rida's "Right Round", to the smash hit of "Tik Tok".

Kesha was on her way to being a superstar, but then came the legal battle between her and her producer of her songs, Dr. Luke. over stuff like Rape and Abuse for years and she wants out of her contract. But through some bullshit, the judges will not let Kesha out of her contract legally, and it started the #freekesha movement for a while. Even when the label "Sony" eliminated their contract with Dr. Luke, she was still stuck with him.

We thought that with all of this and the thought of Luke going out of his way to ruin Kesha's life, we thought we would never hear from her in terms of music, ever again. Until July 2017, when she released a song that I reviewing today as a lead off single for her upcoming third album "Rainbow". As I make this, it has yet to make the hot 100. But I'm gonna talk about it anyway. Let's begin with..

The Production:

Usually Dr. Luke is the producer of Kesha's Songs, now we have Ryan Lewis, the guy that's known for producing Macklemore's songs. Yeah, songs like "Thrift Shop", "Can't Hold Us", and "Downtown", that was him. And Lewis does a well done with it. While there isn't much going on as it is mostly piano with some effects put in, it is simple enough to make it work as it starts out soft and then builds up as the song goes on and it works here. After 2016 that tried to kill songs with piano, it is nice to see one go well.

The lyrics:

A lot of people think that the lyrics are Kesha talking about Dr. Luke....and i'll be lying if I said that I didn't see it. We have Kesha talking about someone that put her through Hell and making her feel weak and nothing. Usually with these kind of songs, people just out right trash them and insult them. But Kesha doesn't frame it like that. She talks about how the problems and people putting her down as only made her stronger in the end and that instead of hoping he burns in hell, she wishes him the best and that as time goes by, he learns and grows as a person before it is too late as there is no need to hold on to the hate forever as it will accomplish nothing. It shows Kesha growing as not only a artist, but as a human being.

The Performer:

People that know Kesha's past work knows that usually her voice is drowned in auto-tune, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Here, we have her actual voice being used with no auto-tune and.....I am fully convinced now that she can actually sing. Honestly, Kesha's singing is probably the best part of the song, she is a powerful singer. It starts kinda vulnerable as expected with the meaning of the lyrics but just like the production, as the song goes on, she goes all out and wow, I was fully amazed at her voice. Though I must ask, is she can sing, what was the point of the autotune? The only thing I can think of is it was the decision Dr. Luke make or something. I don't really know but it didn't make sense when Mariah Carey did it with "obsessed" and it doesn't make sense with kesha now. If you can sing, why auto-tune it?

Final Verdict:

By the time I am writing this, it has currently bubbling under the hot 100. It is a question mark if it will hit the top 20 or even chart at all espically with the releases of albums from Jay-Z and Calvin Harris recently. Honestly I do hope it does chart because this is a amazing track. This is probably Kesha's best work ever. From the production to the writing to the singing, I could listen to this song over and over again and never get tired of it. If this song can at least hit top 20, then I'll be happy because people need to hear this. Honestly, I don't have any problems with the song I can think of. In fact, for the first time on this blog, I will give this song the highest praise I can give it.

Ranking: 10/10.....Ten out of fricken ten.

And if this is what's to expect from "Rainbow" then I am on board with it. Good job Kesha, you got me on board.

That's it for me today. Glad to be back. I'll try to make it more often. I'll see you all in the next episode and hopefully the summer is good to you.
