I tend to watch a lot of Reality TV Competition shows. Shows include, Big Brother (US and Canada), MTV's The Challenge, Hell's Kitchen, MasterChef, (US) and of course, Survivor. I started watching the show when 'Gabon' came, then I went to look at the other seasons while they were around on YouTube. Since then, it became one of my favourite shows. If I wasn't Canadian, I would sign up to compete on it in a heartbeat.
For those of you who don't know, Survivor is a show which shows a number of people known as castaways, send to a deserted location and try's to live thorough challenges, the element of the location they are at, and their fellow castmates. They are split into a number of teams which are known as 'Tribes', They then compete in challenges. The losers of an immunity challenge would go to a place called 'Tribal Council' where they go vote people out of the game and they lose their chance for 1 million dollars and the title of Sole Survivor. They usually have to survive for 39 days for a chance to win the game where then they will have to convince a certain number of people they voted out to give them the money.
Now we are at the 33rd season of the show called 'Millennials Vs Gen X'. A season that has young people going against old people. Which has been done before (Exile Island, Nicaragua) but what is different is that this is between certain generations being the Millennials (Age 18-31) and Gen X (Age 33-) At this point, we are at the final 13, and the next episode has them going to the merge where they go from multiple tribes to only one for the rest of the game. With this being the second time the show merges with 13 people (First being Cambodia: Second Chances). Right now, lets talk about how the season has been so far.
I can say that this is definitely a step up from the last few seasons outside of 'Cambodia'. And we only just past the pre-merge stage. We have fun challenge's, memorable *Likable* contestants, and really fun blindsides. It many of these people end up returning to a future season then I will not be surprised.
Voted Out Players
The seven people that were voted out so far, I can admit, were a bit mixed. I didn't think much of Rachel, Cee Cee, and especially Lucy. They are not really that memorable, or interesting and I will most likely forget about them a few weeks after the season ends. Paul I think did have the potential t do well in this game despite being the oldest contestant of the season. But he showed that one line of dialog can get you voted out. Mari was probably the most disappointing as she was someone that could have done well. She set herself well in the first episode only to fall apart and get blindsided the next episode. The one I will miss the most is 'Figgy'. Not because I thought she was the hottest one of the season (I'm a guy, sue me) but because she brought the positive energy and was fun to watch. I think she was trying to be a strategist somewhat as she did say she is a fan of the show, but if she wasn't in a 'showmance' then she might have had a better chance. But I can't talk about this show without mentioning Michaela who is the most popular of the voted out players so far. It's only been a few days since her memorable blindside but I can tell she will leave a impact. She is strong, smart, has funny expressions, she's a b**ch sometimes, but she has a good heart. Not sure how they can top her exit this season.
Current Players in the Game
We have 13 players left in the game. Which leave the chance for the merge episode to be a interesting mess. This game can go anywhere. The best way I can talk about them is by discussing them one at a time. Let's start with:
Gen X
Sunday: I bring Sunday up first because she is probably the least interesting of the cast. She isn't bad but she isn't really great either. It might be because she isn't known much in the episodes outside of getting a surprising vote in the first tribal council, but she doesn't leave much of an impact.
Bret: The 'Cop' of the season. He was so close to being voted out after people think he is lying about being a cop. Seriously dude, a funeral director while you are always upbeat and smiling? No. I think he had the potential to do well but again, there isn't much to him as he is barely seen.
Chris: I don't know what to think of Chris. He went from the top to the bottom and then came a tribe swap and he seems to be fine. He has Zeke has a potential ally and he can get other people from different sides to be with him. If he can get on the right side of this next episode, then he could be set for a while.
David: I'm surprised that he made it this far. I thought he would be voted out 2nd if not first as he started out too paranoid and that was the first day. Then he started finding idols and trying to keep allies on his side despite being the worst performer of the season. If he makes the end, then I will not be surprised.
Jessica: She has an advantage that can be opened if she makes it to day 36. She has Ken as an ally. She was saved from elimination by David and one of his hidden immunity idols. That's all I got for Jessica.
Ken: Out of the Gen X players still in it, Ken might be someone I see succeeding the most. He is one of the strongest players, he has the brains to do well, he had David as an ally before the tribe swap so if they get back together and bring in the new allies they made then Ken might be able to rule the game for a bit.
Millennials
Will: The 18 year old that is still in High School. Maybe because we had an 18 year old named Julia who was really interesting as she knew how to play for herself, but Will I don't see someone doing well for himself. I will give him credit as he somehow managed to not be a target in anyway up till this point. But the most I seen from him was riding Jay's coattail and being part of the Michaela Blindside, which could come back to bite him. Hopefully Will proves me wrong as I usually don't like people be hated in these shows because they are 'so young'.
Taylor: *sigh*. I wanted to like Taylor. He seems like a fun guy and I'm sure he is someone they talk about when they say 'Millennial'. but I really don't get this guy. He seems to have no idea on how to play the game. While he was in a showmance with 'Figgy', he wanted to open about it to people while she wanted them to be a target for being a couple. He then says things like 'Who cares if we are a power couple? It's no big deal.' It's a big deal as the most successful duo of the show was a showmance (Boston Rob and Amber). There are times where he seems to act like a child and not a guy that has 7 jobs. Yes he claims to have 7 jobs. I sometimes wish he was voted out instead of 'Figgy' because I do not want more 'Idiotland' in these shows.
Adam: I like that he seems to have good knowledge on how to play the game. It's touching that he is playing this for his mother who had cancer at the time (RIP). Right now, he seems to be fine in the game, people like him, he has an idol no one knows about (Except for maybe Hannah) and he isn't too much of a physical threat that he won't be a target. But he better be careful on how to play from this point on, as if he makes the wrong move, then we will be gone sooner rather then later.
Zeke: Oh, I bet he will be remembered years after this season ends. He is a fan, he has the look that you rarely see on the show, he is one of people that went from the bottom to close to the top as he has to potential to do well or even win the game. He does obstacles in the game as he has Chris and David as allies and there are other people who are strong and smart enough to over throw him if they play their cards right. With that said lets talk about..
Jay: Initially I didn't know what to expect from Jay as he started in a alliance with Taylor, 'Figgy' and Michelle and became 'Cool Kids 2.0'. But despite saying 'duos never succeed on Survivor', he showed that he has brains as well as brawn. He also has an idol, has a loyal ally in Will, People like him, he was a leader in the tribes in was him and was barely in danger of being voted out. And then he was the big reason for the blindside of Michaela. He feared she will be a threat in the merge and decided to cut her loose early. He might have a target now, but he could be someone that can get himself out of this mess he put himself in. I'll say it, right now, Jay is my pick to win the game.
Hannah: oh man, I thought Hannah was someone I thought will do well. But part of me thinks she will have a tough time getting out of the bottom. Not because of her anxiety, but because she seems afraid to make moves herself. She was the first to noticed 'The Cool Kids 2.0' but she let Mari make a move against them which backfired. In the preview it showed her not trusting Jay, but I'm not sure if she can pull off getting revenge she doesn't seem to have what it takes to make the move to win.
Michelle: I remember her making and awesome move to make sure Mari gets blindsided. And that was when Tribal Council was currently in process. After that, Michelle faded into the background until she almost left after the tribe swap. I have hopes for Michelle now that the merge is here. If she and Jay team up again and get enough numbers, then they could be the duo that runs the game.
Right now, I am looking forward to the rest of the season, We could be up for an awesome merge episode with these people. I just hope the merge is as good as the first 7 episodes. I'm not doing a ranking now as the season isn't over yet. But now it is a fun season, it is 'Nicaragua' done right.
Thanks for watching. I'll see you next week for a song review.
