I didn't think I would have to say it this early in the show, but let's talk about Rae Sremmurd.
In 2014, we were introduced to a duo of brothers known as 'Swae Lee' and 'Slim Jxmmi' and the duo was named Rae Sremmurd *Ear Drummers spelled backwards* and they quickly started making hits like 'No Flex Zone' and 'No Type'. Then in 2015, they release their debut studio album 'Sremmlife'. Personally I didn't think much of the group, even with 'Mike-Will-Made-It' as their main producer. They were somewhat more boring then anything else. And after one more top 40 hit with 'Throw Sum Mo' the singles started to tank and it seemed like people were done with Rae Sremmurd.
Then in 2016, we have another album named 'Sremmlife 2'. Side Note: Isn't it a little too early to be making sequel albums? Anyway, now thanks to a specific meme, they now have their first #1 single and they got Gucci Mane involved for his own comeback. So I might as well talk about their hit song 'Black Beatles' as I'm might not be able to talk about Rae Sremmurd after this song eventually disappears.
Is the song worth going crazy about? Is it strong enough to overthrow "Closer' as number one? Well, let's dive into this starting with
The Production:
Here is where I actually give 'Mike-Will-Made-It' some credit. For me it's his 2nd best production work. Incase you are wondering I think 'Still in this B**ch' By B.o.B ft. T.I and Juicy J is Mike's best production work. In 'Black Beatles' we get a smooth and sorta fun music. It is simple, but interesting to hear. I'm usually not a fan of the guy's work, but I think it works here. So, I'll give it a thumbs up.
The Main Performers
Rae Sremmurd really don't bring much to the table when it comes to their vocal performances in their songs. Both guys either sound like they are trying to have fun or they are just as bored as the listener. They seemed to improve a bit with their performance on this song then they ever did on 'Sremmlife'. 'Slim Jxmmi' seems to be the one with the most potential out of the 2. Shame 'Swae Lee' gets more screen time. I'll leave it at that.
The Guest Performer
Before I talk about Gucci Mane, I just want to ask, why would you pick that as your rap name? It's a word you use when tickling a baby named Mane in a child like tone. I only heard of one other song that had Gucci Mane on it. It was Mario's 2009 hit 'Break Up'. A song that was so bad, it is actually kinda enjoyable. At the time it looked like Mane was gonna be a huge name in rap music, but then he suddenly disappeared with multiple trips to jail. And we haven't heard from him until 2016, and then he made his album 'Everybody Looking' which I have not heard yet. He made songs with Kanye and Drake, and now he finally has a number one hit. It isn't a good thing when you were once a soon-to-be big rapper and after multiple years, u get a number 1 song by being in a Rae Sremmurd song because of a meme. And after hearing his performance on this song, I won't be surprised if he fell out of the spotlight again. I just don't see the appeal with this guy. The vocal is bland, the flow is not good and the lyrics...... well let's talk about them.
The Lyrics
The number one thing problem that comes from Rae Sremmurd usually comes from the writing. They go from saying they have no type only to say that they only like bad b**ches the next line, to constantly talking about strippers in a club and none of it is interesting to hear.
Here, we have Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane talking about stuff you hear a million times in a rap song. Strippers, Haters, and Money. The only lyrics that stand out was these guys talking like they are 'The Beetles', one of the most famous musical acts ever. Saying stuff like 'Rocking John Lennon lenses like to see 'em spread eagle', and 'Black Beatle b**ch, me and Paul McCartney related'. Funny coming from guys that more like mediocre version of Lil Wayne. And that is tough to accomplish.
Final Conclusion
4/10
I will say that this one of Rae Sremmurd's best songs. The production is good, and their performance sorta improved on this. Especially 'Slim Jxmmi' who shows more effort. But 'Swae Lee' still has some work, Gucci Mane gives a performance that can be done by any other rapper, and the lyrics are nothing special or interesting outside of 'The Beetle' references and them calling themselves 'black beetles'. This is mostly mediocre at best. And another song I will most likely forget in a few years, just like I will forget about these guys.
Thank you all for watching. I'll see you guys in the next episode.
